ACADEMICS

Academic Year
The academic year is divided into two semesters of roughly eighteen weeks each, and the various programmes offered consist of different levels of courses each of which is assigned from a minimum of two to a maximum of six Units (known as Credits in some other institutions).

Faculties
The University is currently made up of the following four Faculties:

Faculty of Arts and Education
It runs full-time first and higher degree programmes in Education and the Humanities in its constituent Departments of:

The Postgraduate School
This School coordinates and streamlines the Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes mounted by individual Departments in the university. In all matters pertaining to such programmes, individual Heads of Department report through their Deans to the Dean of the Postgraduate School.

Outreach Units
The University has three Institutes through which it offers outreach programmes to members of the community at large. A Director heads each Institute and the institutes run short-term and/or part-time in-service programmes for various categories of adolescent and mature members of the public as follows:

Centre for Diploma and Pre-Degree Programmes
The Centre’s actual function for now is to run a pre-degree programme designed to prepare suitably qualified Secondary School leavers for eventual entry into science degree programmes in the University. The numbers of qualified regular applicants seeking admission for the Sciences are, everywhere in the country, always so small that, even with this kind of remedial programme, the University is seldom able to make its annual quota for admission into first degree programmes in the pure and applied Sciences.

Institute of Education
The Institute of Education mostly runs in-service sub-degree, first degree, Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s degree programmes for different categories of serving teachers in the nation’s Primary and Secondary Schools. The certificates and degrees awarded for its programmes are B. A. (Ed.), B. Sc. (Ed.), B. Ed., PGDE, M. A. (Ed.), M. Sc. (Ed.), and M. Ed.

Institute for Part-Time Programmes
This Institute mounts, and in some cases co-ordinates, part-time Diploma, first and higher degree programmes mainly in the Social Sciences and to some extent in other disciplines as well. For teaching its programmes, it relies on the services of the academic staff of the University (where possible) and teaching staff drawn from sister institutions far and near. The programmes lead to the following certificates and degrees:
Diploma in Accounting/Banking and Finance/Business Administration/Public Administration; Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDFM); M. Sc. in Accounting/Business Administration/Public Administration; and Master’s in Business Administration/Public Administration/Environmental Management.
